Marcos New York Italians by legendary chef Marco Pierre White have been popping up all over the UK and last week I went to check out the Kenilworth offering. Marcos MPW Steakhouse at the top of The Cube in Birmingham is one of my favourite places to eat (I took The Northerner there for his birthday as he’d never been) so I was really interested to check out another diffusion line from the great chef.
The Marcos New York Italian Kenilworth restaurant itself is located in a Holiday Inn (I hear a few of the NYIs are located in hotels… maybe their strategy?) in the centre of Kenilworth and is easy to get to with plenty of parking. The decor is exactly that what you’d expect from a Marco’s restaurant – sleek but with lots of homely touches. The red leather booths were comfortable and intimate and there was plenty of space between the tables so you didn’t feel cramped together.
After a tasty bread basket, I started with the garlic and lemon prawns. Simple and understated and served on rustic bread, the prawns were cooked to perfection and when drizzled with fresh lemon juice I wished I had about ten more. My fellow dining companions shared the Antipasto Mistro sharing platter which included Salami Milano, prosciutto, roasted Mediterranean vegetables, buffalo mozzarella, tomato bruschetta, olives, baked mushrooms stuffed with spinach & blue cheese and I’ll admit I had serious food envy.
For my main, I decided to try their sirloin steak. I did contemplate going for something ‘more Italian’ but I was curious as to how it would match up to the steak from the steakhouse. In reality it was a bad choice as of course it was never going to measure up to a steak from a specific steak restaurant – because MPW Steakhouse steaks are ANOTHER level – but it was still delicious and well cooked. I’m normally hesitate to order a steak in non specific steak restaurants as I find that they always come overdone but it was cooked perfectly (I have my steaks medium FYI). I really enjoyed the blue cheese sauce and the ‘lazy fries’… actually I want to take a bath in that sauce!
As somebody who has eaten a huge amount of desserts in her lifetime, I feel confident in saying that what I had probably ranks within my top 10 desserts of all time. The Melting Chocolate Truffle Cake was all kinds of gooey, delicious, chocolatey heaven. Coupled with the vanilla ice cream it really did melt in my mouth and I’d go back purely for this dessert alone.
Overall I really liked the style and feel of Marcos in Kenilworth. I like the choice on the menu and the whole vibe of the place. With 10 of the New York Italians across the country, I’d absolutely visit again and am considering the Stratford-upon-Avon offering for Father’s Day this year.
