Bun & Bowl @ The Cube Birmingham Restaurant Review

Ever since returning from Florida last year, I’ve been obsessed with eating shrimp – which are different to prawns I learnt this year. The problem is finding a good restaurant that can appease my shrimp needs. Enter Bun and Bowl; one of the newest establishments to open its doors in Birmingham’s ‘The Cube’ complex. Last week, boyfriend and I headed down to Bun & Bowl to try out their delicious menu of burgers and shrimp in a bowl (see what they did with the name there?) based in The Cube complex, the decor has a chilled out, contemporary feel to it.  I loved the wood and steel!
We wanted to sample the cocktail menu which included these Lychee and Strawberry numbers.  Both delicious with the strawberry one having an almighty kick – a bit too strong for me but perfect for boyfriend.

Food wise to start, I chose to have the Shrimp in Garlic, Lemon and Parsley Sauce. The combination of spices infused in the broth with the cooked to perfection; the slightly chewy shrimp was like heaven in my mouth. It comes with some crisp bread on the side and I could of done with a few extra slices to lap up the remainder of the broth. Boyfriend opted for the Mini Burger – which is exactly what it says on the tin – a mini, perfect mouthful sized burger which gives you a taste of the extensive burger range that Bun and Bowl offer.

For mains, we switched round with boyfriend having seafood and I the burger. I have to admit as soon as the plates (or in his case bowl) came to the table I had food envy. My burger, named ‘The Cube’ burger – a 7oz prime burger served with beef tomatoes, lettuce and red onion on a brioche bun- was delicious although the patty was too solid for my liking (I like a little air in my burger so they fall apart easier). The star of the meal was definitely boyfriend’s spicy shrimp dish called ‘The Tornado’ – chilli, roasted lemon and garlic brother with some tasty shrimps to boot!  It tasted like a firework had gone off in your mouth. The broth was spicy with an after kick and as with my starter; the shrimp was cooked to perfection – ever so slightly chewy with a bit of crunch. We also had sides of regular and sweet potato fries. I’ve always been a bit hesitant to order sweet potato fries after a bad experience in my teens by these we delicious – soft in the middle, crunch at the ends and seasoned well to enrich the taste.

Overall we really enjoyed the meal.  By far the winning dish was boyfriend’s ‘The Tornado’ shrimps in a bowl.  We said when we go back we’ll both be ordering one of the shrimp dishes with perhaps a mini burger to start – gotta get that burger in somehow!  If you’re coming to Birmingham and looking for somewhere fresh to eat I’d definitely recommend Bun & Bowl.  It’s reasonably priced but above all a delicious tasty meal in a vibrant, chilled out setting.
