The Double Cleanse

A couple of months back, I wrote about how I’d ditched the trusty Bioderma in favour of going straight on to my skin with cleanser to clear the days makeup away.  It was positively received by my lovely readers and today I’m going to tell you about further steps I’ve taken to ensure that my skin is completely makeup free and more importantly, well cleansed by the time my head hits the pillow at night.
As a dry skinned girl, I’ve always been worried about the double cleanse as I thought it would dry my skin out further.  How wrong I was.  Since I began double cleansing I’ve noticed a fabulous improvement with my skins appearance.  So why should we double cleanse?  My friend Andy has wrote an amazing post on his blog about why it is so important to cleanse properly. (Go read his post and then return to finish this one… GO!)  If you wear makeup, one cleanse is going to remove makeup but not actually cleanse the skin deep down.  I’ve noticed since I began double cleansing I have a lot less spots; my pores are smaller and I have less blackheads.  This is because my cleanser is being given the chance to get right down into my pores and cleanse them properly.
It may seem like an expensive habit to have but as Andy mentioned you can use micellar water as a first cleanse if you’d like to.  If you’re looking for a drug store micellar water try the Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water which is only £2.99 for 400ml of the stuff.  That way you can save your favourite cleanser for the second cleanse which is actually more important than the first.  My favourite cleansers to use are the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser (John Lewis £14.50) or the Emma Hardie Amazing Face Cleansing Balm (Feel Unique £36 review here) which I need to restock on.  I love both cream and balm cleansers which I rub all over my face before washing off with a warm muslin cloth or flannel.
With regards to the drying out problem I though I might have – I didn’t!  My cleansers are still gentle enough not to rip the natural oils from my skin and combined with the rest of my skincare routine, I haven’t noticed any extra dryness.
I’m still in awe of the improvement that double cleansing has made to my skin.  If you haven’t tried it you must, if not only for a week to see if it improves your skin.  Of course, everybody’s skin is different so it may take longer/shorter time to see any results but I promise you won’t be sorry!
Have you tired the double cleanse before? Did it work for you?
