The Balcony Brasserie Review

Just before Christmas I was lucky enough to be invited to a preview night at the new restaurant that has just opened on the fourth floor of Selfridges in Birmingham.  The restaurant is located on, would you guess, the balcony of the fourth floor that looks out over the Bullring shopping centre.  The Balcony aspires to deliver stylish, British classics and quirkier dishes that Selfridges shoppers wouldn’t be able to resist.  Run by Searcys, the same people who operate the private members club at the top of the Gherkin; the Balcony has a contemporary feel to both the decor and the menu.
Speaking of the menu, just looking down it makes me feel hungry.  There is a selection of comfort food such as fish and chips (nom!), cheeseburgers right down to salads, fishcakes and the dessert menu is definitely something that got my attention.  I will definitely be going back to try the Oreo cookie cheesecake and ‘Snickerboxerglory’ again.
The afternoon picnic tea also looks delicious with scones, macaroons, lemon cupcakes and a selection of sandwiches.  It also looks great on it’s little picnic table.  Attention to detail is certainly being given in the layout of the dishes.
Don’t be worried if your were a fan of the Moet Champagne Bar that use to reside in the space, the Balcony will still be serving the full range from the world’s number one champagne house.  As well as champagne, the bar will also be serving a selection of yummy cocktails (and mocktails for those that don’t drink.)
I really liked what I saw and will certainly be dragging the other half there for lunch when we’re out shopping.  The food was tasty and having looked down the menu the full sized dishes are reasonably priced for a city centre restaurant.  The Balcony is one of the first stages to be complete of Selfridges £20 million refit and if the store is as good as the new food on offer then I think the people of Birmingham are in for a real treat.
