Birmingham’s Winter Wonderland

I love living in Birmingham at Christmas time.  Everybody gets really excited about the German Market and other attractions rolling into town.  This year Centenary Square is home to Winter Skate, the outdoor ice rink which sits between the brand spanking new library and Symphony Hall.  I have lots of friends who have been and had a go but I was a little nervous as I haven’t donned a pair of ice skates since about 2003!  Remember Saturday afternoon ice skating when you were a teenager!
On Wednesday James and I were invited to try out the rink for ourselves.  It was a chance for me to wear my favourite wooly hat and Gryffindor gloves (yes I KNOW I’m cool!)  Like I said, I haven’t been any where near an ice rink in ten years but I’m proud to say I never fell over (James did once hahaha!!) so I avoided a wet bum! It was so much fun out there on the ice and I managed to pick skating up again pretty quickly.  I didn’t even need to grip the sides or one of the cute penguin shaped skating aids that children can use for balance.
The sessions are 45 minutes long and you don’t even realise how quickly it goes.  The best thing about going on a Wednesday is that between 7pm and 9pm you get a free mulled cider to keep you warm with every skate ticket.  We’re definitely going to be trying it out again before it leaves on January 5th.  There also an ‘Ice Bar’ on the side where people that may not wish to skate can spectate from.  They offer lots of tasty treats including toasties, chocolate and pastries.
