Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Diffused Light Review

So now I’m back on the blogging scene, it’s time for me to tell you about a product that I’ve been in love with since I bought it back in June.  I picked up the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Diffused Light when I was in Florida.  It was never my intention to pick this up abroad as I know this is readily available in the UK but seeing it in Sephora after passing the hourglass stand a handful of times… I just had to have it and I saved myself a couple of pounds in the process.  Happy Days.

The Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders are available in six different shades.  Marketed as finishing powders they are designed to recreate flattering light on the face that makes the wearer look flawless.  The Hourlass website says that each powder ‘captures, diffuses and softens surrounding light with photoluminescent technology’.  My first thought is, ‘what the bloody hell does that mean?’  After a quick google, the long and short of it is that photoluminescence is the process in which a product absorbs the light particles and reradiates them.  So I guess on the face, these powders are designed to reflect the light to change the way it looks (for the better obviously!)  Right after that very quick science lesson…

I settled on the Diffused Light powder which is a soft, pale yellow.  Hourglass describe it as ‘warm’ but I would put it on the very cool side of warm and even that is a wee bit generous.  It is designed to reduce redness and make the skin look clearer which I think it’s very good at.  When I first picked up this powder I thought that it was only a highlighter and I would only use it under my eyebrows and to highlight my cheeks.  Don’t get me wrong, you can use it like that but after reading up on the product and watching a few videos (most notably, this one!) it would be a total waste if it was only used for that.  Now as well as using in the usual places I also use it across my cheeks, down my nose and sometimes on my forehead.

One of the main things I love about it though is the dewey glow it gives my skin.  You wouldn’t guess that I had dry skin at all as it makes it look subtly refreshed and brighter.  One thing I will say is that I urge anybody who is considering purchasing this product to go and test it out as I strongly believe that with the wrong shade this is going to do nothing for your skin.

I think using the right brush is also key to getting the best out of this product.  I would recommend a nice big brush with spaced out bristles.  That way you ensure you get a light even finish without it looking caked on.

Finally because this is an Hourglass product it’s as free from parabens, talc and lots of other nasties that I try to avoid.  Now onto the main question, did I really like it?  The answer is yes, yes I did!  This is one of the nicest finishing powders I have used.  I think it takes some work to find out how is best to use it on your skin and maybe for the price (£38 from Space NK) it shouldn’t be so much work but I’m so happy I took the time to play around with it.  I’d love to try some of the other shades to see if they suit me so if any of you other pale beauties have tried different shades please let me know what worked for you.
